Elementary and Secondary Education
The Malden R-1 School District offers modern and well-equipped classrooms and related facilities for students. In October 1987, patrons of the school district passed, by an overwhelming majority, a tax levy that permitted the construction of a new junior/senior high school and upper elementary school, along with the renovation of the lower elementary school. The construction and renovation included air-conditioning in all the buildings. Malden residents believe in the importance of quality education for all and the school provides a wide curriculum for its students, as well as many outside study activities.
The Harry L. Crisp Bootheel Education Center (BEC), located at 700 N. Douglass Street in Malden, has provided quality higher educational opportunities to the area since 1988. The educational curriculum provides both credit and non-credit courses.
The success of the BEC is due largely to the cooperation among members of the Bootheel Educational Consortium. Members of the consortium include: Southeast Missouri State University at Cape Girardeau, Three Rivers Community College at Poplar Bluff and the University of Missouri Extension Service. The progress of the Bootheel Education Center could not have occurred without the strong and consistent support of people throughout this area, most especially the residents of Malden.
